Auckland International Airport Limited

xplorer Graphics Limited (EGL) provides Auckland Airport with an intuitive map viewer that makes airport information immediately available to every staff member.

Auckland International Airport Limited (AIAL) is the largest and busiest airport in New Zealand, with over 13 million passengers a year – expected to double by 2025. This major airline hub is one of New Zealand’s most important infrastructure assets. It is the country’s second largest cargo ‘port’ by value, contributing around $14 billion to the economy, and caters for over four million visitors each year.

With such a lot going on, it is essential that AIAL employees and other Airport customers and stakeholders have access to ‘up to the moment’ information. In the past, technical information, such as the location of underground services, required an information request to engineering staff, and could be time consuming.

Asset Data Services Manager, Stewart Symon, says that “We needed a mechanism for easily transferring and sharing data – and EGL’s web viewer was it”.

“I was impressed. This is the first time, in my experience, that a company has delivered exactly what they showed in their presentation. There was not one single thing that was oversold”

“EGL demonstrated what the GIS viewer would do, and that is exactly what we got!” The three week project included the installation and configuration of GIS web viewer on Auckland Airport’s ArcGIS Server.

“The GIS web viewer helps our staff achieve their informational and functional needs, and it’s enjoyable to use too – that’s important”.

EGL delivered a GIS viewer based on the Geocortex Essentials product from Latitude Geographics. Geocortex Essentials provides a spatial application infrastructure sitting on top of Esri’s ArcGIS Server which allows viewers to be quickly configured and deployed to satisfy user needs. This provides AIAL with an agile solution.

“The EGL solution provides focused data to all areas of the business to meet needs, and we can add to the viewer when we are ready to”

Stewart says that EGL’s GIS web viewer allows the non-technical AIAL staff to quickly and easily maintain, manage and disseminate the content viewed by users.

“It saves everyone a lot of time in accessing required information”. This means that technical staff are freed from fielding information requests and viewer users know that what they are looking at is correct.

“This is clearly just the beginning of our working relationship with EGL – we are simply delighted with the GIS web viewer”
